Why You Shouldn’t Use Yell for Your Website

Ever heard of Yell? It’s the online business connected with the famous Yellow Pages. That’s the business directory that has shrunk from the size of an entire set of Encyclopaedia Britannica to a small novel.

Nowadays, they’re offering business owners the chance to get their own website. Great, right? You can get a free listing with them too… but if you go for that deal, you should know you are going to be contacted with some heavy sales patter to try and get you to part with some money.

However, the hard sell is not (in our opinion) the worst thing you can expect. If you agree to get them to design a website for you, you will be locked into a 12-month contract. If the site doesn’t deliver, you will be stuck with it for at least a year.

Would you like to own your own business website?

Most business owners assume their website is theirs to control and update as necessary. Usually it would be… but if you go with Yell, they own your site. You’re merely renting it from them. Even if you sever your contract, your site will be gone. Your domain name isn’t owned by you either, so that will go too.

Even if you are happy with it, you will soon realise that any changes you wish to make must be done by the team at Yell. Many people have said their requested changes either take ages to be completed or they never happen. How would that impact your business if you had to move premises or change your contact number?

A fully managed website from Yell might sound appealing, but with Yell it appears to be anything but. It’s also possible to get a fully functioning and accessible website from an independent web designer at a fraction of the price you’d pay to Yell. Just one more reason why you should reconsider if you were thinking about going to Yell.
